Dance Marathon

While at Seattle University, I have had the great fortune to be a part of a number of fantastic groups and projects. None has been more personally rewarding and challenging than Dance Marathon. In 2007, a small group of students were assembled to create the first ever Dance marathon in Washington. Dance Marathons take place at colleges across the country as a part of the Children’s Miracle Network, and exist to raise funds for their local Children’s Hospital. Seattle University’s Dance Marathon is a 16-hour, student run event with games, activities, entertainment and dancing that has raised over $30,000 in the last 3 years.

The event itself is a challenge. Pushing oneself to keep moving, to keep energized and to remain positive for that length of time requires dedication to the cause Dance Marathon supports. Spending 9 months preparing and planning for an event of this size also requires a strong commitment to keep in mind what the end result will be. Over the four years that Dance Marathon has existed, I have had the privilege of serving as either a planner or Morale Captain– Morale Captains are responsible for maintaining morale and acting as a point of inspiration for “teams” of dancers.

There comes a time in projects where when the “whatever it takes” mentality must prevail. Whether that means countless hours preparing, personal sacrifice or putting oneself outside their personal comfort zone and wearing a leotard while dancing to “Single Ladies” all for the sake of morale, dance Marathon continues to succeed because of those who do whatever it takes. Below are a few photos from the event over the past couple years to give you an idea of what it is like
